Jackson Gilgen dining room

Jackson gilgen residence

The remodeling of this under-1000 square foot house is a study in how to achieve the perception of spaciousness with very minimal extension of the perimeter. Los Angeles hillside building regulations imposed very strict limitations on expansion to the rear, so the interior space is enhanced by a few crucial partition modifications, redesign of kitchen and bath and incorporation of beautiful and choice woods, limestone, and a fireplace of board-formed concrete. An additional phase of construction realized a large forward-thrusting wood terrace at the living room level, roughly defined by the locations of mature pine trees. While extending the modest interior space and serving as the roof over a study below, it affords a sweeping view of Silver Lake and beyond to Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
