A new, expanded playroom—colorful, sophisticated, without graphic clichés—appeals to children from ages 5 to 13 in the Pediatrics section of the Medical Center. The suspended grid ceiling was modified to include a raised six-foot-square area of clear acrylic panels to permit a view up into the interstitial space—a “mystery space”—where changing overhead displays may be lighted at will. Three soffits/lighting coves are suspended below the main ceiling level providing soft indirect light. Extensive custom cabinetry provides storage for games and other toys, while a children’s’ height sink allows for play with boats or other floating objects. A dramatic fish tank is built into the wall.
