Rigler house rendering 2

Lloyd E. Rigler Residence

A master plan for a two-acre estate with a stunning 360 degree view of the Los Angeles / Valley metropolitan area proposes a two-story 11,500 square foot residence and studio carefully fitted to the site’s mature landscape and advanced architectural design precedent—a small but prized 1946 guest house by renowned architect John Lautner. Restored, the guest house will remain distinct as a guest suite and library, attached by pergolas, lending its materials palette, spatial form and plan rotation to the new work. The 4th course offset style of new brickwork matches that of the original guesthouse, emphasizing the horizontal dimension with pronounced shadow lines. The roof of the grand 2nd story living room rises up on dendriform steel columns branching out at the top. It slopes down from a 17-foot high glass wall on the north side to a clerestory bringing light in from all sides. The plan includes three master suites. The overall ensemble of buildings includes a new pool house and estate maintenance center.
